Migrant Workers in Austria and Europe. Challenges for Industrial Relations, in particular Trade Unions
Study supported by the Anniversary Fund of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank
en
The focus of this research is on socio‐economic, institutional and legal ramifications of Austrian trade
unions and their policy towards migrant workers. We analyse the changing role of migrants in the
Austrian labour market and the implications for union policy. With the rapid decline of trade union
membership in private industries as a result of economic restructuring, trade unions in Austria are
slow to realise that a change in trade union policy may be called for, in analogy to unions in the
United States of America which increasingly focus on the services industries and their workforce,
namely women and migrants.
